Time for change
The Market Magnet journey began in 2007 whilst Darryl Comley-White was a shareholder of a small local record label and production facility based in Bryanston South Africa. Noticing the dramatic change the introduction of the digital music age had on the traditional and ageing CD (Compact Disc) era and seeing the major music bars, Musica, shrink in size and close down throughout South Africa, it was time for a change.
University of Life
After school, Darryl’s two year gap year in the Spar retail industry is described as his best university of life managing 60 staff and dealing with a difficult boss. He decided to advance his studies and majored in music, marketing and business management.
Entrepreneur at Heart
No stranger to the entrepreneurial journey he had always ran his own small business operation from his parents’ basement recording voice-overs for large South African corporations. These included: Discovery Health, Ster-Kinekor, Nedbank, Standard Bank, The IEC and Absa, to name a few as well as small music productions for unknown bands.
A Suffering Industry
The services of the little-unnamed recording studio extended to final mixing and eventually video productions for a number of shows on SABC, Mnet and Multi-Choice. Thereafter the Bryanston based record label opened with big budgets and great aspirations only to suffer as many did with the introduction of the Apple iPod and MP3 players and iPhones.
This, however, became the springboard to a new business: Market Magnet Consulting. Driven by passion, marketing know-how and the desire for success all efforts were redirected from music to business. The rest as they say in the classics is history…
Market Magnet Consulting, now in operation for 10 years has helped hundreds of businesses reach their growth potential by planning, strategizing and implementing highly-effective low-cost marketing strategies that deliver a positive return on investment.
Market Magnet was sold to a consortium of companies after only 2 years of operation only to be bought back by Darryl as the core focus of the business was drifting far from the original intent. This original intent has been the primary motive and drive for the business and still remains the major definite purpose of the business today.
